How to trade with GEX
A short field-guide to the three key levels on your GetGamma dashboard. If you finish this page you'll know everything you need to use the tool.
The framework, in one paragraph
Options dealers hedge every position they take on. That hedging pushes price. Gamma exposure (GEX) tells you how much hedging pressure sits at each strike, and in which direction. Three levels come out of that picture:
- Call Wall — the top of the current gamma distribution. Resistance. Price tends to stall or reverse here.
- Put Wall — the mirror. Support. Dealer buying absorbs weakness at this level.
- Zero Gamma Flip — the boundary between the "dampening" regime (above) and the "amplifying" regime (below).
How to read a day
- Look at spot vs. flip level first. Above → intraday moves face headwinds. Below → moves have tailwinds.
- Locate the nearest wall. How far is it in percent? Above 1% is a full trading range; inside 0.5% is where price gets sticky.
- Note the magnets. The +GEX magnet is where dealer hedging pulls price in tightly. The −GEX magnet is a volatility zone — expect fast, larger moves around it.
What GEX is not
- A directional signal. It says how a move will behave, not up or down.
- A short-term catalyst. News, flow, macro still lead. GEX modifies the reaction.
- Static. Positioning changes intraday, especially near opex.
The two-minute daily routine
- Open the dashboard, note the flip level and current regime.
- Note the Call Wall + Put Wall — that's your box for the day.
- Note whether spot is close to a magnet or in the middle of the box.
- Trade whatever setup you already trade — but use the levels to size, stop, and target with respect to how the underlying will actually behave.
That's the whole loop.
